A hand grabbed me
from behind, yanking my hands together and clamping my mouth shut. I struggled,
but the hands were like iron, taut with muscle and my captor whispered into my
ear, “Make it easy on yourself, new girl, and just go with it.”
Jake! I recognized
his voice immediately and understood why I couldn’t break free, he was half
troll! I slumped, acting as if I accepted the situation. “Good girl.” He then
led me to where my mirage used to be. Thankfully it was no longer there; when
he had grabbed me he had broken my concentration, ending the mirage charm. “If
you do anything, I will squeeze even tighter.
Understand?”
“I’m sure she
understands.” Jane squeezed around the shelves, her voice barely audible. “Good
job Jake. Everyone else is in position and now that we have her, we are ready.”
My eyes went wide
and I quickly gazed around the vicinity, trying to see where everyone else was.
I spotted Cody on the top of the left shelves, crouching next to a girl with
pink curly hair. I whirled my head around, Jake losing his grip for a second,
but within a blink he yanked my head back, growling a warning. I did not pay
him any attention though; I had seen what I had wanted to see; the two other
people in Jane’s group, crouching on the ground where I used to be hiding. The
boy had dirty blond hair, was semi-tall, and had hazel eyes. The girl though,
looked almost exactly like the other girl and I knew they had to be twins, as
all Fairy Halflings were.
I tried to see Lisa
and Thomas but all I could confirm through the gaps in the books, was the fact
they were still talking, seeming to be oblivious to what was about to happen.
All they had to do was look over and see that my mirage was no longer there but
they were deep in conversation. Just my luck. I bit my lip, willing them to
notice that I was gone, but as Jane began motioning to the rest of her group, I
knew they would notice too late, and as I had guessed, they did.
Lisa glanced too
late towards the location of my now missing mirage, “Hey, where is Elena?”
Jane strolled into
the vicinity, “Oh let’s just say she is occupied at the moment.” Both Lisa and
Thomas jumped up. “Oh I wouldn’t do anything rash if I were you.” She motioned
to Jake and he dragged me where Lisa and Thomas could see me. I let fear cover
my eyes, as I hopelessly tried to free myself from Jake’s iron grip. “If you
move before we are done, Jake might squeeze just a little too hard. Also…” she
looked up and Lisa and Thomas followed her gaze up to where Cody and the first
Fairy Halfling crouched on top the bookshelves. “I doubt youse guys could save
her and yourselves before someone gets hurt. So why don’t hang around and
answer my questions?”
Thomas and Lisa made
eye contact, and understanding passed between them. Thomas then nodded to Jane.
“Very well, Jane. Though I doubt we will be very interested in what you have to
ask.”
“We will just have
to wait and see now won’t we?” She began to walk towards the table and Thomas
turned around to sit in the chair opposite of her.
“Stacy, make sure he
doesn’t close his eyes!” Jane snapped up towards the girl next to Cody.
She grinned in reply
and gave thumbs up. “Don’t worry, Jane, I can see everything from up here.”
Thomas turned back
towards Jane and sat down, Lisa claiming the chair next to him, and Jane began
speaking, contempt icing her voice. “You didn’t think we would let you contact
your friends now did you? Thanks to some of our…acquaintances we were able to
finally figure out how you always were able to get your friends to come to the
rescue. We have a much better understanding of your talents and I assure you…”
her eyes filled with confidence, “you will not be closing your eyes and sending
memories filled with SOS signals to your friends.”
Shock flew through
Lisa’s eyes but as I gazed at Thomas, he let nothing slip. He sat there
thinking over everything Jane had said. “Jane…why do this now? Didn’t y’all
have something planned for later today? Second period seems a little early,
even for you guys. Can’t this wait?”
Annoyance flashed
through Jane’s narrowed eyes, “No it cannot for we never pass up opportunities
that would help us succeed.”
“What do you know
about anything?”
“We know enough!”
“Is that so? Well…”
Thomas was about to say more but he glanced over my fear stricken face and
thought better of it. “Let me tell you this. If you knew the true story you
wouldn’t be so quick at messing with us.”
“Oh, really?”
“Just ignore his
taunts Jane.” Jake spoke roughly, jostling me around, “You are the one asking
the questions, not the other way around.”
Jane quickly
recollected herself, pushing her hair back behind her pointed ears, “Thank you
Jake. Now back to business.” She put her hands on the table. “First tell me
what that glance towards Elena was all about? Don’t want her finding out too
much at once?”
This time it was
Lisa who spoke, “You tell us. Why did you take the time to find her in the
hallways?”
“I am one the asking
the questions! Not the other way around. And if youse guys don’t start following
directions…”
Jake squeezed my arm
to what felt like breaking point and I yelped, though it came out as a pathetic
squeak because of his hand smothering my mouth. Lisa’s eyes filled with worry
as she turned towards the pitiful noise I had made and I cursed myself for
showing true weakness. Jane just laughed, “See? Youse guys are taking extra
care with this new girl.” She leaned in closer, “And I want to know why. What
are you planning to use her for?”
Nice! I like it! :D
